I really can't see how they can get away with this, and I hope the Office of Fair Trading bang them to rights. How would LCC feel if they had to bid every year to keep trading from the Civic Hall? Yet that's what they are trying to do to us.That poor lass invested lots of time and money in that site, yet only got 7 months trading out of it.Anyone who has a good idea (selling a particular product in a particular place) is being asked to give the idea away for free to the highest bidder. I could live with it if the bid got you 10 years on the pitch, but 1 year, no. The only saving grace is the spineless, toothless LCC enforcement. Maybe the traders can just swamp them. On Look North tonight it was suggested there may be an 11th hour reprieve for the Red Bus.The possible loop-hole involves altering the serving hatch so that it opens facing the woods at the back rather than the road side. Something to do with the land the bus is actually parked on being owned by one of the big estates (probably Bramham Park, but don't quote me on that), whilst the layby is owned by Leeds City Council.Apparently the owner of the Red Bus Cafe has a long term lease in place with the owners of the land where she is actually parked, so I can't really see how the council can turnf her off her pitch....The whole process is set to be a disaster. Can we expect to see overpriced branches of Starbucks or Costa Fortune (or heaven forbid mobile MaccyD's?) popping up in laybys now as they can outbid the current occupants?

Although my Dad earned less than£2 a week including overtime, as a postman,so he couldn'thave afforded Youngman's (up or down) in 1930!F&C from the corner shop 'take out' were 2d/3d for fish and a pennorth of chips. Scollops (scallops) cost 1d (a roundslice of potato in batter) and a fishcake,(2 round slices with scraps of fish offcuts between and dipped in batter were 2d.) Quite substantialas they used large potato slices as big as your palm. Funny thing,we never got fat even tho' the F&C were fried in Beef drippingThe (30's)Leeds Medical Officer of health was quoted as saying," If I could ensure every schoolchild in Leeds had a plate of fish and chips each day,I'd be a happy man!" Sure he was right!Arry I don't remember fish and chips being that cheap - my earliest memory is fish 8d. (about 3.5p) and chips 3d. (just over 1.5p) from the wood hut I mentioned on another thread. However, I can bear out what you say about the wages. My mother worked at Avro during the war and the wages were £6 p/w which she said was astronomical. My Grandad worked down the pit for 30s a week in the twenties! I remember Youngmans being on Briggate just above the Odeon and then moving into a street just off Briggate also accessible from Vicar Lane, have I imagined this?

[a song by the Bonzo Do Dodah Band].But, seeing as we are off topic. The YMCA had a cafeteria / restaurant on the first floor. All Brown Windsor Soup and waitress' in black dresses, somewhat reminicent of the Julie Walters sketch. My Dad had his dinner [lunch] in there every day.

Hi TrojanHave just typed a long reply to your Youngman'squery and pressed Post and the flipping page seized upso had to restart! Wonder if it's me,or the SL Site????OK, start agen! If you look at the bottom of that menu,Don Tate has added, " Youngman's still survives today(1 9 8 8!), frying from premises in Queen Victoria Street",As this Street is now part of the Victoria Arcade ComplexI can't recall seeing a Youngman's Restaurant in there.(Too posh for fish n' f'nurks!)Another excellent place (no pun!),is Murgatroyd's at the crossroads above Yeadon, en route to LBIA. I have mentioned this in a previous posting (don't ask!) along with 'The Fountain' on theopposite side of the crossroads. This also is excellent but therestaurant only opens weekends. It has a good reputation(cheaper too!)and the Takeaway is open every day I think.CheersArry

There's also one in Yeadon itself which claims to be the oldest fish and chip shop in Yorkshire - never been in but I noticed it one day. But to get back to Youngmans I'm sure that before if was on Queen Victoria Street it was on Briggate. To continue the caffs theme - there used to be one in the Odeon before it was twinned I seem to think.

I can remember the Dersiford (Derisford?) Cafe at Seacroft Centre. It was right at the far end, near the exit that led onto the bridge to the Queensview Flats and was a proper old fashioned cafe, even down to the jukebox. I can also remember they had a couple of space invader games at the back near the counterI'm fairly sure that it is / was the same people who now run LB's cafe at Cross Gates. There was also a Wimpy there for a long time, near the market, which then became "Bites" after the Wimpy closed, but we very rarely went in there.

I'm pleased to see the owners of the Red bus cafe aren't given up without a fight.. They were hard at it painting and doing alterations to serve the food from the back of the bus which is on private property. They should be ready for business very soon, i say good luck to them!

Almost an institution the Red Bus Cafe.I remember a mate of mine telling me the bus broke down there and was just left, and eventually opened up as a cafe. Any ideas if this is true as it seems a bit far fetched!
