There are/were many pubs in Leeds and roundabout that went through the Kirkstall/Dutton's/Whitbread's line - but I do know brewery's sometimes sold off or exchanged houses - so it maybe that the Fountain changed from Kirkstall to Sam Smith's. I also believe that as Mackeson's was a 'national brand' - (like Guinness though not as big )it was was a beer brewed/bottled under licence - so perhaps it was brewed and/or bottled at the brewery in Kirkstall hence the advert.    Not surprisingly Kirkstall had several pubs in Kirkstall - in addition to the Star and Garter they had the Bridge, West End and the now demolished Abbey and Old George. The Royal Sovereign and George IV were Tetleys. There was also a Woodman and a Station Hotel - Im not sure what brewery they were attached to - though I think the station was Kirkstall - very close to the brewery and so the brewery tap before the Bridge.

"Looks good, tastes good, and by golly it does you good!"What ever happened to Mackeson? Can you still get it? I haven't seen a bottle for years. PS The Fox and Grapes in Pudsey was a Dutton's house. It had a huge Dutton's logo above the door before it changed to Whitbread's. (Yuck!)

Mackeson's does still exist -they have it in cans in Morrisson's for instance. According to Wikipedia the brand was acquired by Whitbread in 1920 from the original Mackeson's brewery who were based in Hythe , Kent. Whitbread now no longer brew beer(insert your own joke here) and Mackeson is produced under licence by Young's brewery in London.

Thanks, Drapesy. A trip to Morrison's is planned for today. When I lived in London, I found Young's was a marginally better beer than most (all is relative, however!)

No he got killed along with Lieutenant George, Captain Darling, and Baldrick. As for Morrison's bottled beer you're spot on. Try Morrisons' "The Best" it's quite strong 6% but bottle conditioned and an excellent drink.Asda's "Whitechapel Porter" is also very good. The also sell Robinsons' (Stockport) "Old Tom" which is lethal at 7.5%!I'm quite fond of strong bottled ale - you can't have a session on it because you'd be under the table after three, but it does have a bit of taste. As for draught, Leeds Best is good, I had a pint of Rudgate Ruby Mild in the Palace last Friday - that was good, and of course good old Tim Taylor's "Landlord"I used to go to the Eagle on North Street in the seventies and eighties because it was the only place in Leeds you could get Landlord on draught!Beer Ritz opp Bryans has an excellent selection of bottled beers, buit pricey though - they also sell some of the Belgian rocket fuel beers like Grimbergen Tripel at 10%!
