I assume that is no longer the case ...Chris, I think one of the people I know was also an apprentice at the time that worked on that tank. Do you have any more info about it? No probs, actually, if I post here what was relevant [after 8 pints of 1664, it will be gibberish] mail me at liitsAThotmailDOTcom and I will send you the pics and a transcript of the official history of the vehicle that was chopped in half plus photos. BTW, would the person that you know / knew have been any of the following... J. Hobah, M. Pawson, ? Sykes, P. Barraclough?. Mail me anyway, and I'll transpose the official "history" / report [and also see if we can "bang heads" about some of the people who deank in the Manston]. Regards, Chris.

I responded to this back in 1998, This was in response to some chap who had taken a few pics of the "Cent" at Bovington. A more detailed report could be yours...... [you will probably recognise the style].

I've heard a whisper, that the whole existing site could be about to be flattened as sold for development - possibly housing. It would seem that the place is simply too big for anyone to take the whole thing on as a going concern. Now the UDP has all that area down as industrial / commercial development and I know for a fact that Optare have applied for planning permission to build houses on the current site of their premises across the road, which has been refused. With the proposed "Outer Outer Ring Road" plans, the area would be connected to the M1 extension at Thorpe Park, which would certainly solve the traffic bottleneck out through Crossgates.

Posted somewhere else a couple of weeks ago that Barnbow was rapidly disappearing - but not surprisingly, that is valuable land and earmarked as you say, under the UDP for development.Much of that development, commercial at least, is pivottal upon the construction of the Bypass to service it. This is a road which whilst needed, is not easily welcomed by many in its proposed form, and the proposal was dropped by the Highways Agency. The outer ring road, the A6120 was however, 'de-trunked' a few years ago, the responsibility thereby passing to the Council and with it the freedom to resurect (and finance) the plan. I'm sure that it will come in time, and with it the extension of the present Green Belt boundry, spreading the built environment of Leeds even further afield.

I found this old photo taken at Barnbow in 1943. It refers to the 17 pounder anti-tank gun which was redesigned at Barnbow to fit in the turret of a Sherman Firefly tank. If you click on the picture to enlarge it, you can read the sign. The word "Tiger" refers to the German Tiger tank. At the time, the 17 pounder was the only Allied AT gun with the potential to penetrate the Tiger's thick armour at normal combat ranges.Wizzard show! Jolly well done, chaps!

Yes, as an inhabitant of Scholes, I must say I have my concerns about the bypass from what I saw on the plans. We currently have a lot of traffic cutting through the village from Barwick, then down Leeds Road, and I'm not sure whether this would make it better or worse. Also concerned about the almost certain development up towards Scholes and Barwick - quite like being in the countryside at the minute, not sure I want to live in an industrial estate.....That said, I do travel with work a bit, and a easy route onto the A1/M1 link without having to brave Crossgates and Colton would be nice, I suppose I can't have it both ways!
