I work quite near the Beech. I'll have a close look at the windows next time I'm passing. Any excuse for a pint. Incidentally, I was in a pub recently, and asked for a pint of Leffe. I was told they only serve it in halves, due to it's strength(?) so I asked if I could have two halves. "Sure, mate," he said. It's that marketing, again!

Wakefield city centre has the best example of surviving melbourne signage I have seen. The Jockey pub on Northgate opposite the main post office has a large original melbourne courtier mosaic over the door and the windows are original with a leftie and rightie. Also The Black Rock has a surviving curved etched courtier window on the way into the pub. Athe back there are some original melbourne windows also these are well worth checking out!

Just passed the Beech, too early for a pint. I think the courtesans in the windows are original, and not repainted. I'm not even sure if they are painted, or whether they are some sort of transfer. The gold parts look like gold leaf they are so bright. The fact that they look so new is probably down to good workmanship.

WEHEYY - So I was right in the first place then Nick - the Black Rock was a Melbourne pub.I thought I had seen the symbol somewhere on it as I passed by while working, yet yesterday I was parked in traffic outside and could only see what looked like sunbursts done in that stick on vinyl on the front windows.See Drapesy - Im not going as daft as I thought I was LOL

Yes Si - it was the brightness and sharpness of the colours that started me wondering if they had been restored recently. If they are original then that speaks volumes about the workmanship that went into them.

I don't know how I've missed this thread but I have. I have a special interest as I have a photo of my Grandad also showing Mother at a Melbourne Brewery Stores. When and where is the Question. If anyone has any ideas I would be very gratefull. Grandad was a Drayman, here he is standing by his truck, mother in the background. Though the family originated from Goole and all lived there most of their lives, this could be Doncaster but I'm only guessing. The telephone number on the truck by the way is the Leeds headquarters of the Brewery.
EX, Goole. Leeds, Normanton, Adelaide, Normanton, Keighley. Armley Lad

Wow - brilliant pic fred1935 - thanks for that.I suspect it would be very dificult to establish exactly where it was taken though - I expect there were several stores/depots across Yorkshire.
