Leodis top 50

Post by jma »

This is just idle curiosity. Does anybody know how Top 50 most viewed images works on Leodis?

I don't know for sure but probably exactly as it says on the tin.

It does say it is today's top 50 viewed images. Each image has its own code call for each of the two views (the ones for the current number 1 is shown below) and it wouldn't be too difficult to also code how many times each of those calls was made in a given timeframe. I would suggest its probably the last 24 hours rather than a strict today i.e. 28th September because how would you deal with populating the 50 once the slate was wiped clean at midnight.

I know money is tight but I think Leodis could do with a lick of paint. Link it to social networks, make the images a bit bigger, improve the search, integrate the ordering system with something like Paypal and such like. The Manchester version is at https://images.manchester.gov.uk/index.php?session=pass. If I had the time I'd volunteer to do some of the work myself.

Having searched a lot of the locations which interest me, I find the Top 50 a useful lucky dip. I do wonder what searches have led to a particular collection. I can see that some images like the multi-lens camera will be regulars because of the way the collections are set up but there are others -Bewerley Street School - which are a mystery. I can see that recent additions will attract interest. How many searches are there in a typical day? Will one enthusiastic user make a big influence? A while ago, the Top 50 didn't change for quite a while: does that mean somebody has to press a button?
