John smyth house info

Post by loiner1965 »

My great great etc granddad was John smith who was lord of the manor of whortly and had the smyth arms pub named after him .
By all accounts he lived nearby up green hill lane area in an old hall . I am trying to find out what it was called and any pics of it .
I know the family owned heath hall and bowcliffe hall but interested in this one . Many thanks

many thanks ian but i have seen that before but unable to locate his manor house.
i can trace my family history through his line back to lady babara palmer who was king charles 11 mistress who he renamed her family to fitzroy,
been told its holbeck hall or wortley manor.
they must be old plans of the area showing the house but unable to find them online

i think this is it, the large buildings on the map are not the manor house, they are manor farm and workers cottages.

also his uncle or brother another john smyth lol lived at heath hall wakefield.
its very confusing as they were all named john smyth and i cannot access the family tree as it shows you in detail all the smyths.
unfortunately the website was called priviledge families of yorkshire and you could download the family tree in detail which went back to around 1600 with richard smyth of myreshaw bradford.
now you have to subscribe so i am working from memory which at best is poor lol

i did read on the internet that his lane was very long and private and he possibly stopped at the manor farm on his way to the pub lol.
could these buildings belong to the farm ?

You need to verify the source of the information you got from the internet, it may be speculation? The lane from the farm is not private it is a public right of way. It goes north to Cabbage Hill where there were pubs etc. The building I have coloured orange IS the old Wortley manor House, the photo shows some of the existing features, and it was part of the estate which had a farm. The vicarage for the church was on the opposite side of the main road. You should not assume that a manor house would be as large or as grand as a stately home.

You can download your family tree here via the wayback archives, its on page 172 to save you searching
https://archive.org/details/pedigreesof ... st/page/n6
save it as a pdf for easy reading

This seems more likely place for your ancestor, its called Green Hill House

Is this the end of the story ...or the beginning of a legend?
