A minor earthquake near Ilkley on December 18 2019.

Post by Leodian »

In the UK earthquakes section of the British Geological Survey (BGS) website it reports there was a 1.7 magnitude earthquake in the Ilkley area on December 18 2019. Though not in Leeds it is very near so I thought (hope!) it may be of interest. Though a magnitude of 1.7 is of little significance in world earthquakes events it is quite high for the UK and high enough to get reported by the BGS. The map with the report shows the actual location of the earthquake was at Denton. The details are:- Date: 18/12/2019. Origin time: 03:52:47.0 UTC. Location: 53.938 -1.770. Depth: 14 km. Magnitude: 1.7. Locality: Ilkley,West Yorkshire.
I wonder if anyone felt anything, though as it was during the night perhaps only very light sleepers may have done so.

I’m not too far from there. Unfortunately at 03:52 hrs, I was sound asleep.
