This may be an "imposter", I cannot find any reference to it on any of the old 6" maps that are online

I'm very impressed Brunel that you managed to spot that BM (real or not). :)

Thanks for that link mhoulden :). I have not read through it all as the lack of sentences makes for hard reading, but no doubt work for lawyers when needed! The original print type brought up through the 'Original Print PDF' link is fascinating!

By chance whilst wandering around the area today (June 7 2016) I spotted this Bench Mark (BM) on the Job Centre Plus building on Eastgate. The first photo is a close-up of the BM and the second shows its location a little above the pavement and left of the pipe on the right.

That the building is said to be on Eastgate surprised me, but I also noticed there is an Eastgate road sign on the wall of the homes nearer to the New York Road flyover. If asked I would have guessed (wrongly!) that the centre is on the start of Regent Street.

I started a thread on August 12 2013 about the 11 face carvings on the Oxford Place side of the Leeds Town Hall http://secretleeds.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=4921.

Other than cursory glances at them when passing by I've probably not looked closely since I saw and photographed them on August 12 2013, so I did look close yesterday (June 9 2016). To my surprise I then readily spotted a Bench Mark (BM) that I had never noticed before. The first photo is a close-up of the BM and the second shows its location.

Here are two maps, the first from 1889 and a later 1952 map showing the bench marks on both.

The first map shows this mark as 133.94 and the second map as 133.46

Is this the end of the story ...or the beginning of a legend?

early bench marks were measured from mean sea level at Liverpool, the bench marks on later maps were measured from mean sea level at Newlyn. the difference may be as much as 0.6 feet

Thanks buffaloskinner for the maps showing the BM on the Town Hall :). I notice there is a BM marked on the Great George Street frontage in the 1889 map but it is not marked in the 1952 map as it seems to have been hidden by an extension. I shall have a look in due course but I wonder if anyone knows if it is still visible? The extension seems to be where the gents toilets were.

Thanks warringtonrhino for the information about the heights above sea level of BMs :).

Edit added June 16 2016. I had a good look around at the Great George Street frontage of the Town Hall today (June 16 2016) but I did not see the old BM so (unless I failed to see it) the BM will be hidden by an extension (I've now noticed that the BM is not marked on an at least 1908 map but the toilets are).

I like to unexpectedly spot a Bench Mark (BM) but occasionally I know from maps that a BM might be there. Having seen several BMs marked on a 1964/70 map in an area just a little from the centre of Leeds I had a meander around on June 22 2016 and found 6 BMs and then on June 23rd I saw one that I did not get to on the 22nd. As only up to 3 photos can be put in one post I decided keeping the close-up photo of each BM and its location together was better than splitting them across posts, but that means there will be 7 posts so I hope that is not considered too many and also not boring.

This BM is on Back York Place at the junction with Britannia Street.
