Again looking at that map spurred me on to looking at "Old Leeds Lower Briggate" photos on line and I saw one, a shop next to the Golden Lion Hotel, a Men's outfitters called Class. When I was about sixteen I used to my shirts from there. my pride and joy was a "Fankie Laine" labelled sharkskin shirt (£3) which was beautifully smooth but ever time my Mother ironed it the buttons and the buttonholes would finish up in a different place. I still wore it though.

Tilly this is the 1890 map of the area showing Sidney Street and another short one was Ebenezer Street and Ludgate Hill (previously discussed somewhere else). East Lane and Harper Place were two more although they no longer exist as they were built over by the lower end of the market and the bus station.

Two things about the second map. I hadn't realised the recently demolished Millgarth Street station was a replacement for an earlier one accross the road. Secondly it shows the path of an unculverted LadyBeck with a bridge at the bottom og George Street.

On the combination. There's a helluva a lot of Public Houses and Inns ;)

10th February 1937. Construction of covering over Lady Beck at York Street.
The beck wasn't covered over until 1937, see here under the bus station on Leodis http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ... SPLAY=FULL

From Leodis

Picture 1
3rd September 1934 Leeds Model lodging House, at the junction of Dyer Street and Millgarth Street, numbers 1, 3 and 5. To the left across Millgarth Street, the new Kingston Unity Insurance building can be seen on Eastgate, which had just been widened to provide a better throughfare. Faded signs are on the walls of the lodging house, cars and carts can be seen in the street. A poster on the wall of the building advertising show at Empire Theatre.

Picture 2
Leeds Model Lodging House, the manager was a Francis Bott. This view is of the courtyard, looking from the kitchen towards the entrance, which is the archway with double doors. A clock by Potts and Son of Leeds (one for Leodian) is on the right wall. The building had formerly been a dye works. When it closed, Shaftesbury House in Beeston was built to accommodate men needing a temporary home.

There was a large lodging house on the left hand side of the street that runs from opposite the Duck and Drake in Kirkgate to the Calls. sadly there were some poor scruffs went in and out of there when I worked in Cross York Street in the 1950s. I am sure someone will know its name.
