CUT BENCH MARK

This cut bench mark (probably more correctly a cut bench mark with bolt) by the main doorway at Leeds Minster caught my eye on November 11 2015. A bench mark (BM) is noted there on an 1846/1847 map that I've now seen but as the cuts do not seem particularly eroded I suspect it may not be the original BM. If so I wonder if the stone it is on is original and the old BM has been recut at least once at some stage?

I would doubt that it has been re-tooled and I'd even go so far as to suggest that it may have been even more "crisp" prior to the building being cleaned [high pressure water washing]. A lot depends upon the material in which the BM is cut. Some types of brick wear well as do some stones, others have suffered badly from cleaning operations, pollution, urination [human and animal], frost damage etc, etc.

That's a well spotted BM Brunel. It looks somewhat weathered but the building seems to be modern (perhaps it has been well cleaned).

When on Leeds Bridge today I noticed a badly weathered BM so I took photos. I had though a feeling that I've taken photos of it before and have now found that I did and used them in a SL thread in July 2013.

This Cut Bench Mark (CBM) is on the former Wellesley Hotel building on Wellington Street near to the junction with Thirsk Row. This CBM is more weathered looking than it seems in this photo that I took on December 10 2015, so it was chance that I happened to spot it. On looking at an 1891 map in the Old Maps UK website I've found that a Bench Mark is noted there, on what was stated to then be the G.N.R. Station Hotel. In view of its weathering I wonder if it is the original CBM?
