Disappearing Waitrose

Post by warringtonrhino »

I have moved away from Leeds, but once a week I visit family in Austhorpe, so am not up to date with the majority of Leeds.
I was looking for a Waitrose in Leeds, (don't ask)and was informed that there is one is in Meanwood.
I found it on Google, when I 'drove' along Green Road, it was on my left hand side.
I turned left then left into the car park and found the Waitrose had disappeared.
I was in a car park/shopping precinct, what is truth and what is fiction?
Is my google driving license out of date?
Does this disappearing act occur anywhere else in Leeds?

I'm pretty certain it was still Waitrose last time I was in the vicinity, although my view is from East of Arcadia across Monk Bridge Road. The supermarket previously the Co-op and GT Smiths is/was(?) at the derelict church end of the precinct with the goods entrance off Monk Bridge Road

Tykebhoy Thanks for that.
I went today and it is there exactly as it appears on the google Green Road view.
it's when you drive into the car park on google, that it disappears!
How does that happen?
While I was in Leeds I also went to Wilsons to get the pork pies for tomorrows rugby league cup final.

Are you saying it disappears on Streetview and becomes the Coop? I had a similar "conversation" with Leodian last week over the bottom of Albion Street and the escalator. Streetview only really covers streets not car parks or pedestrianised areas. Roads have been revisited, in some cases numeous times, but nooks and crannies like car parks or the bottom of Albion Street aren't. Streetview drops you into the most recent view it has, if one exists, of a particular view. Green Road and Monkbridge Road have had recent visits therefore the building is Waitrose from the roads. The car park hasn't had a recent visit so therefore as soon as you move off Green Road you jump back in time to before Waitrose replaced the Coop

Thanks
That's it well explained, at my age you wonder if you are having a senior moment.
I was concerned because traveling from Warrington I needed some confirmation that the Waitrose would actually be there.
The drive into the old Coop in now the under store car park.
Before last years meet up, I checked on google the car par fees for the car park next to the Adelphi.
I am dyslectic, so need time to read the details, the signage stated that parking after six was free.
I got there after six, and didn't think I had to pay.
A traffic officer gave me a ticket cos the charges had been revised since the google car visit.
I am learning not to trust Google when it matters.

I see you have understood while I was trying to illustrate my point but as I've done the work I'll post anyway

The above is the contemporary view from April this year. If you click on the clock top left it opens a pop up photo with a timeline at the bottom. You will notice other dots on the timeline which from memory were Sep 14, Apr 12, Jul 08 and Apr 08

Now we have the July 08 version from roughly the same spot although I struggled to get any Coop branding. Note that the bus shelter has changed and there are the same dots on the timeline.

Finally the Car Park. You will note there is no clock so no timeline which makes June 2008 your only choice. I find it bizarre that the car park is taken in the month before and a couple of months after the Green Road images in 2008 as the car must have gone on Green Road to get to the car park.

For those interested it is possible to display a different time in the inset photo to the main one by clicking on the appropriate dot. A magnifying glass then appears bottom right of the inset and clicking on that updates the main image to the same as the inset.

Hope you enjoyed the pies and the match, What a team. when I am in Leeds I always call in Wilsons for some "Growlers" but as they were a £1 each six month ago I might start giving them a miss as I seem to buy them for half of Gloucester and I never seem to get weighed in.
