Hi Carrotol, LRB, Si and co.'Scran' is a scouse word I understand. In fact, oneof my old mates in the RAF was from Bootle and always said,'grab yer irons, (Knife, fork, spoon and mug!), and let's get down the cookhouse for us' scran!' that was in 1947! They have some greatdescriptive words in 'The 'Pool, I've found, but this is Leeds,so nuff said!Used to laik at Taws meself! Cobbled streets were ideal,as the marbles wouldn't roll far when hit with me 'Stonker'!! (Mind boggles!). 'Stonker' was a term for a champion 'Taw' same as a Bulley which was a bit lower down the champs league! Think ofconkers where you had ten-ers and six-ers etc which recorded how many of your mates chestnuts you'd smashed! I hear conkers is now banned by the PC softies in schoolyards! Parents might sue the skooil if their little darlin's got bruised knuckles!Of course, the word 'Stonker' has an entirely different meaning these days! Isn't it 'Knurr and Spell', Si? (Near enuff!)We called it 'Tip cat' if I remember well, which I DON'T!Then there's 'Wellie Wanging,' (What's that all about?)Not really a Leeds passtime!Do any of you still have a 'Bink' in your house?! It was a stair headprojection into a bedroom to let you get to the top of the stairswithout banging your head! The Bink was handy as a shelf, but youlost a bit of bedroom floorspace. Saved on lino at least!More later!Arry
