I joined the Leeds City Police in 1966 with the collar number 895. I lived in the Farnley area and I think your grandfather, David Noble also lived in that area but I think he was in charge at Holbeck (Dewsbury Road). I did know him as I think I ran across him in relation to some discipline enquiries which in those days senior officers conducted; no specialised C&D. He , Mr Noble, was considered quite a character. I did serve in the West York's Police from 1974 (amalgamation) to1979 when I went to the Royal Ulster Constabulary where I retired in 1997. Good to remember 'old times' and depending on your length of service we may have some other mutual acquaintances.

Hi Ivan,

I am sorry that I have not replied earlier, I missed your post.

I knew David Noble. As bgams has said, he was Chief Superintendent at the old Dewsbury Road Police Station. When I joined the Leeds City Police in 1965, he was Superintendent at Upper Wortley Police Station. At that time the head of each Division was a Superintendent. This was changed in later years when the divisions amalgamated, in two's, to form 'Jumbo Divisions' and the head was then a Chief Superintendent - in this case Dewsbury Road PS (South Division) and Upper Wortley PS (West Division) combined to make one division called 'C' Division. Your grandfather will have been promoted because of this and also because of the police establishment being increased which always created promotions.

I don't know when he left Dewsbury Road PS but I was there as a uniform sergeant in 1972 and I don't think that he was there then, but I may be wrong - the Superintendent was Eric Walker (affectionately known as 'Moose').

I remember that David Noble lived in a detached bungalow on the Ring Road at Wortley, next to Butt Lane. Everyone knew him as 'Black Sam' but I don't know why. He died on 29th August 2000, aged 83yrs. I don't know the date that he retired but he was still serving at the time of the 1974 amalgamation of police forces.

Ian,

Yes very nice to see your contributions; brings back lots of memories. Am still in touch with PC 4 Gott whom I showed round at Millgarth in the late 60s. I live in NI where I remained after I retired having married an RUC girl. Unfortunately I tend to live in the past and find names like 'Moose' Walker, 'Big Red', 'Sneck' Hepton, 'Hoss' Hanson (you can go home for your dinner but don't make a meal of it) et al all very satisfying. Do you recall those spoonerism/malapropism that Hoss Hanson came out with. It was talked about at one stage that Valerie Barker, a WDC at Wortley was going to compile a book of all his (Hoss) material. Another favourite of mine was said by Hoss to Valerie after he had called her in to his office for some reason and he said, 'You can always come and see me because nobodies inflammable. ' I'm a sad individual! But nice hearing from you.

Hi Brian,

I am fairly sure that Eric Walker is the only one who is still with us. I know that Derrick Holmes died in 1972 but I don't have dates for Joe Hepton and Geoff Hanson. The thing about Geoff's 'spoonerisms' is that they were not just 'one off's' - he said the same things (and others) all of the time in different situations and infront of different people.

I don't know what happened to Val. I think that I am right in saying that she was very seriously injured in a traffic accident, and nearly died, but I it was probably before your transfer to the R.U.C. If you join http://www.narpowestyorkshire.co.uk/ and look at the Leeds Section/Photographs there is a 1973 photograph of Val with Dave Maurie, Dave Musgrove, Jim Parrott and Roger Anderson. There are other photographs of Len Bradley, Arnold Pirie, Brian Barker and Geoff Hanson who were all at Upper Wortley PS C.I.D. at that time.

I am sorry to procrastinate (but it is thirty five years since I last saw you) and I don't want to bore any other members of the group. I believe that this new website (it changed recently) has facilities for private messages if required.

Best wishes.

Ian

Ian,
if you are talking about this group (SL) then please don't bother about boring us. The thread is clearly titled to suggest "Police memories" and those not interested can easily not partake. Like Blakey's (and others) memories of on the buses and Leodian's (amongst others) photographic contributions your memories of Police matters are an invaluable addition to the site and long may they all continue.

Cheers

I,

Yes interesting saw those photographs and the only person I could not name was Jim Parrot so thank you.

The thing about alot of the Hoss Hanson 's spoonerism was as, you allude, the fact that in context they made some sense!

In relation to the 'you can go home for your dinner' etc. remark, it was made when Leeds City detectives were called out to a shooting just in the West Riding area and West Riding detectives, who, unlike City detectives, were used to going home for their meals, were also present. So it made some sort of sense! His other famous one was 'Go round the front and cover the back' which was said, I maintain, at the Bank of England in the Headrow in the early 70's when we were doing a bullion run. Some disagree and say that it was said at a bomb scare at the Leeds Town Hall and others say it was made at Armley Goal after an escape. The common factor here was the fact that at each location the rear of the premises had the most complex/notable façade in stark contrast to the front . His remark about 'nobodies inflammable, synchromesh your watches and the detection rate has gone down .. degrees', I know beggars belief, but so funny.

Some office Wortley CID, with characters like Dick Ellis, Mick Grubb, Mick Mills,Jon Cowman I think and latterly'Tatty' Grant and so many others.

Just noticed the name Dave Maurie, I never was a Bobby but got to know Dave through a mutual friend, he was a really nice fellow and I just wondered how he was going on and if you could put up that photo with him on it. as I have not lived in Leeds for about 30 years I have lost contact with old friends.
Ta.

Best wishes.

Hi J.C.D.,

I have had a look at the photographs, which I referred to, and they are part of a collage which is under the copyright of NARPO. Dave's surname is actually spelt Maury and not as previously stated. I saw him in Ilkley about four months ago but I didn't get chance to speak to him. I think that he lives in the Ilkley area. We were both Uniform Inspectors, together, at Holbeck Police Station in 1988/90. I lost track of his career after that.

I have sent you a private message.

Ian
