Isle of Cynder Sovereign Square development

Post by Cardiarms »

Excavation of the old Queens Hall site have revealed stone and brickwork from the Isle of Cynder. My estimation is that it is the Tenter Street Bridge area, possibly the 'oil Mill' shown on the 1847 map, but i could be way out.

Those are fascinating photos that you have taken Cardiarms :).

There looks to be some extremely interesting features. The 'kiln-like' feature to the top of the first photo is intriguing. I look forward to seeing how the work progresses.

Are they not the old tram inspection pits from when it was the Tram Garage? Can't tell the exact location from your pics.

I have only closely read some of the information brought up through the link and have just skimmed over much but there is a lot of interesting information in the report. I notice that in the information about the goit in the area it states:-

"...the development site was previously located in an area known as the Isle of Cinder. Water channels known as ‘goits’ supplied the local mills which proliferated in the area from the 18th century onwards. A map regression exercise showed that a goit orientated roughly north-west to south-east ran through the development site. It was first depicted on mapping in the late 18th century although the origin of the watercourse is believed to pre-date this.

The development site is situated to the south-west of the medieval core of Leeds. The goits formed a series of watercourses and channels which acted as mill races or lades. The goits are associated with the medieval manorial King's Mill, 16th century Flay Crow Mill and later Concordia Mill. Photographic evidence from the early 20th century shows the goits had been revetted by stone walls with some buildings built directly on top of the goit walls. Some images show ceramic drainage pipes within the disused goits. The purpose of the pipes would have been to use the pre-existing goit routes as a ‘mains’ to discharge into the River Aire to the south.

The goit that runs through the development area is still depicted until the Ordnance survey mapping of 1908, having presumably been filled in sometime prior to this date...".

That the goit there was filled in is a shame as I had hoped that it (and the remains elsewhere) would have been covered over but not filled in and so would still be there today waiting to be entered.

Looking pretty much in the reverse direction of the photos from the junction of Concordia Street and Sovereign Street. So the photos were taken either from or immediately outside the multi-storey.

I just about remember the Queens Hall and seem to think the main entrance was where Sovereign Street left Swinegate. Would that also be the tram entrance if so the "pits" visible would pretty much be perpendicular to a straight route in. I think :?

I do know it was a very cold place at night when watching groups there in the 1960s.

Thanks BuffaloSkinner that confirms my memory of the Queens Hall entrance. The other photos suggest the trams ran in/out pretty much parallel to Sovereign Street before swinging right to Park up against the Swinegate side. I can't see any real evidence of inspection pits but if they are under the parked up trams (as one would suspect) then they would be pretty much perpendicular to the visible part of Sovereign Street before the dog leg right but at the Swinegate side. However all but the "pit" in the first of Cardiarms three photos are far too close to Sovereign Street to have been in use in the Tram sheds as other than the tracks it appears to be flat concrete.
