Thanks Omegaman and CardiThat makes sense: the other side of my garden fence is a public footpath, it was dug up about seven or eight years ago to install new street lamps, and subsequently dug up to a depth of about 6 feet for a reason I never discovered. I bet the brick was uncovered during one of those excavations, probably having covered the original cabling for the street lighting in the mid-70s, and chucked over my fence.    
The older I get, the better I was.
