What is it pleeeaase. No mystery there Jogon. The metal casting you mentioned covered one of two devices belonging to the transmission of the bus. Leeds City Transport buses were mainly preselector or two pedal (preselector in the case of those early Daimlers) in which the drive was transmitted fom the engine to the gearbox by a fluid flywheel. If the bus was fitted with a clutch and manual gearbox the casting covered the clutch. As the Meerkat says in the modern TV adverts - "Simple"

There's an article about the Martins Bank branch at http://www.martinsbank.co.uk/11-88-80%2 ... 20Lane.htm including photos of the staff and the inside. It closed on the 12th December 1969, the day before Martins Bank merged with Barclays. Judging by the lack of paperwork on display I'd say this photo was taken just after it closed, but I wish banks still looked like this when you went to pay things in:Quite a lot of other good stuff about Martins Bank at http://www.martinsbank.co.uk and branches in the Leeds district at http://www.martinsbank.co.uk/Leeds%20Di ... %20New.htm

In the 'Memory Lane' feature on page 13 of the Yorkshire Evening Post today (August 7 2014) there is a photo (dated February 24 1959) looking down Eastgate to Quarry Hill Flats. It shows a car park (with cars) on the right down to the Yorkshire Hussar building that was the only building there then! All that was built afterwards on that side (as well as the Yorkshire Hussar) has of course recently been demolished to become the Victoria Gate project! It did not last that long!

With reference to Eastgate date of buildings , if you go to britainfromabove there are many crystal clear photos that will allow some date clarification . I have sorted a few out quickly which show Quarry Hill during construction the buildings on Eastgate the Scriven Machine Tool Company which was next to the Motor Bike shop on the corner . I saw an interesting picture of Boult Brothers on Queen Street and wondered if it was still there , I don't know what Boult Brothers did Cloth of some description? the building is still there but a different business . Re a local topic if you look at Morley photos there is an aerial view of the Town Hall before the Coop was built on the same block as The Slip .Phot Ref DatedEPW057198 24/5/38EPW057201 -----EAW002637 19/9/46EAW046758 12/9/52EAW046763 -----EAW046757 -----EAW046762 ----EAW028063 21/2/50Any other queries you need resolving britainfromabove would certainly help in solving , the quality of the photos is excellent and the zoom quality brings up great details .

Hi BIG N, It's the same building - the give away is the slope to the left down Lady Lane and also the "Martin's Bank" sign that is about a third of the way in front he right and about half way down on the first photo on the website. If you look at it these days you can see the feint marks where the sign once was. The combined image "1938 –Images (Combined) © Barclays!" doesn't seem relevant - The historical photos of this building all seem to have the cut off after the first window going down Eastgate until the British Gas showroom building was built so I'm not really sure what they are trying to achieve by combining the photos of two different parts of the building.
