I read somewhere that chav is a Romany word, too. Is this right, Rangieowner?

Id heard that it was derived from Chatham,ie Chavem,a type of insult for the tracksuited,baseball capped Elizabeth Duke/H Samuel bejewelled brigades of underclass in the south east.Not sure if its true though,the origin of Chav that is.I know a Chav is as i described.

In Huddersfield when people use " chelping " they mean gossiping or " calling " [ as in palling ] and again it is something only women do .

chelping to me means whinging and complaining! dunno about the chav thing being romany.. leave it with me!!!!

Si, you are correct! chav derives from the romany for child a 'chavi' or from the spanish 'charvo' meaning 'lad', more info here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chav
