These block shops were built in 1875. Meanwhile this was the plan in 1986 that came to nothing.

I like the 'Market Plaice' name to the fish and chip cafe in a post of Phill's. In the caption to Uncle Mick's post showing the scene at the Game Row in 1947 it mentions the "old Egg and Butter market" which I don't recall ever hearing of before.I bet the market traders now would love to see the crowds seen in the photo of shoppers after the fire. Mind you, considering there had been a fire there are a lot of cardboard looking boxes piled up that would presumably not be allowed now under Health & Safety.I'm glad I proofread this post before sending as I had typed "fish and chop café"! Mmmm, a fish and a nice chop (and chips) to go with it sounds yummy.

With my rubbish (being polite! ) knowledge of Leeds I am probably wrong but it does look to be the old layout at the bus station to the top. Oh, and the block to the top left may (tentatively, perhaps, might possibly) be the toilet block that had a curving entry/exit corridor to at least the gents. That does look like the old bus station and curved toilet block, doesn't it. I miss those old toilets, they were old-fashioned but always clean, and the lady attendants took a pride in keeping them nice. I think there was a newsagents just to the left of them.

Hi Lee.Here are some photos with descriptive text that pretty much covers when which parts were built, and which parts were lost in the fire.

I hadn't realised that only one part of the damaged market was original built after the fire. That was complete in 1976. It wouldn't be until 1981 that the next half would be finished. We were told in 1976 (38 years ago) that was only a temporary structure so the market could reopen quickly. A more suitable structure fitting in with the grand market would replace it

Today's market layout after the fire explained. That is a carousel at the bottom of the market isn't it?I'm sure I can recall one being there now.
