The steps are still there csnosi. You can see them here on my photo I took a few years agohttps://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn/3868829210/The only thing is you don't realise you are that high off the ground. The tops of the trees seem like bushes from the same angle.

Hiya BarflyThe river level of the River Aire at the Environment Agency's Armley recording site has risen over ½ metre over the last 24 hours and is about 1 metre higher than it was a couple of days back (its recent peak was at about 9:00 pm last night). There is clearly a lot more water now in the river than recently. http://apps.environment-agency.gov.uk/r ... ionId=8009

Thanks for that. I hope the Bank Holiday weekend sees lower levels so at least the depth may be visible -- it's just a brown torrent at the moment.

The tops of the trees seem like bushes from the same angle. Thanks for putting these photos of the steps on. They do take me back to the late 40's and early 50's!We lived in Armley and my Dad started taking me to watch Leeds Rugby at Headingly then and we always went down these steps and over the bridge on our way there.I can remember being terrified crossing the river here one day when some workmen were repairing the wooden slats, taking old ones out and replacing them with new ones. They removed the worn ones and placed a platform with steps at each end over the gap! We had to walk over this structure!Nowadays they would have closed the bridge at each end! Looking down at the raging brown water scared me as I was only 8 yrs old . Another time the river was high and the bridge was trembling with the power of the rushing water. When you looked over to the left you could see the other bridge. My Dad said Prices Tailors was near the end of the bridge on the Kirkstall Rd side?I did eventually get over my fear of crossing this bridge I'm glad to say but have not been over it for many years. Must give it a go one day!

There is clearly a lot more water now in the river than recently. http://apps.environment-agency.gov.uk/r ... ionId=8009 I checked the river level on the environment agency website yesterday and saw that the river level was low. So today I took a walk down to the ford and, sure enough, was able to cross the ford only getting a drop of water down my walking boot due to careless foot placement. There was lady with a dog off its lead on the island though and the dog seemed to take an interest in me so I didn't take a look around as I don't trust dogs I don't know.If anyone wants to take a walk across though now seems to be a good time to do it. The water level on the page linked to above is showing 0.32M at Armley and I'd estimate if you walk in the right place the deepest water you have to go through is about 10cm (4") deep so if you're careful (unlike me) you won't get your feet wet in a pair of walking boots.

Hi Barfly. That's interesting about being able to walk across the ford due to low water levels. I went today to where the River Aire comes out at the Dark Arches and I noticed there were quite a number of fish (around several inches long) readily visible just under the small arch at the side and the larger arch next to it. I wondered if they were keeping in the slight shadow there to keep out of the direct Sun.
