Today's comparison location. The difference in height of the google camera letting us see buildings behind not visible on the old photos. I've not used the exact same angle because it wasn't really clear where the location is.

There are still a few old veteran Gladiators that have been restored and are chugging about on old car rallies today. The nearest match to our car is this red 1903 Gladiator Tonneau. The only difference appears to be a new door fitted. I wonder if these are the same car? It would be good to find out.

By strange coincidence the old Gladiator was swapped for a Jowett Javelin car.The same make of car that makes an appearance on our 1958 elusive North Bar stone photo. The Jowett was quite a rarity and was only produced from 1947 to 1953. It was built locally by Jowett Cars Ltd of Idle near Bradford. It would be great to think this was also the same car involved in the story. The fed up Jowett owner trying to part exchange his old car for a sofa in Preston's Cash Furnisher's. Having no luck he drove down to the scrap yard at Marsh Lane and came away with the old Gladiator instead.Autowrex later sold the part ex Jowett and got £70 for it

Hi Phil, I think your comparison photo is taken at the junction of Marsh Lane and New York Road, making me think the scrapyard has moved from where the b/w photo was taken. From what I remember, the car was over a gate further down New York Road towards the bus station, the rail viaduct formed the back wall of the scrapyard, I'm going back to the 50's and used to pass it every time I travelled home to Compton Road on the tram, later the bus. I hope this is of help to you.

Thanks for that Johnny. From what I've been reading that seems the general consensus where it was. Memories do get clouded though. It's worth looking into other possible locations to get a match. Here's the full size photo. Cheers

1964 map. It's difficult to spot any other location on a curved corner with a gradient like the old photo on street view today? http://tinyurl.com/o53fpqq

(Click the photo for the full size)The mystery deepens!I can only see this other street corner down the whole street as a possibility. http://tinyurl.com/pkrsn5sAnd that corner has had a building stood there for a long time. The only other street is Bridge Street further down which has had buildings stood either side for a very long time too. It's difficult to get a clear view of any old car on this aerial image. But it does give a good idea of the building and street layout in 1951. The old Gladiator was still there at the time.

My recollection of the car over the gate was not on a corner but would be on the straight part of NYS, in the gap between where the advertising hoardings are now. I know it was a long time ago and memories do become a bit confused, well they do in my case, but that's how I recall it in my minds eye. Sorry for any confusion caused on my part.
