I do remember it being a bathroom showroom though! Graham's Plumbers Merchants is still going, it was their place at least at some point in the early 70s. Compton House was occupied by BR District Engineer. From I think after the Wellington Street offices disappeared for Royal Mail house. They relocated to the Aire Street offices in the late 80's when B.R. abolished the divisionallevel of management late 80's up to privatisation(Jarvis etc)So Compton house has been empty since then. "Jim" may know the full details. I think a friend worked in Bridge House for Royal Mail and was relocated tothe Arlington Business Park.So those 2 properties have been empty for yonks.

The only thing I can add to your post dogduke is that some at least of the BR Civil Engineers' offices were at one time in Thirsk House, on Thirsk Row. As a member of the Outdoor Machinery Engineers' staff, I had very little to do with the Civils, so have no further information.

I think Jan Fletcher's company owned this and had plans for re-development. But she's now fighting bankruptcy over her lost legal battle with the council over the Arena development

Used to walk past this block when it was a car showroom back in the early 70's. There were always real top of the range cars on display, Rolls, Bentleys, Daimlers etc..

Just around a year or so ago there were some roadworks just to the right hand side of this building. I did notice, whilst passing on a Double Decker a couple of times that there were some exposed service tunnels. They looked to be a couple of metres deep and about one and a half metres across. This was on the Copper Gate side of the building. Any ideas anyone?
