Tree felling off Stairfoot Lane.

Walking on Stairfoot Lane (between Alwoodley and Adel) earlier today I noticed there was tree felling going on over a large area on the right on the approach to Stairfoot Bridge (coming from Alwoodley). The work seemed to be getting done by a commercial company judged by vans parked in the car park nearby. It would seem unlikely that the felling is to remove diseased trees, as those I saw cut into small bits looked fine. I wonder if some other use is planned for the area. I don't know if the wood there is private.

I have received this email from Councillor Barry AndersonFrom: Williamson, Justin Sent: 11 February 2014 11:41To: Anderson, Cllr BarryCc: Stevens, John; Gorner, GlenSubject: RE: TREESDear Councillor AndersonThis work is being undertaken by GPMC Projects Ltd who are sub-contractors working for Northern Powergrid. I have had several site meetings and discussions with a company called Fountains (formerly Fountains Forestry) who have the contract to ensure that overhead power lines are kept clear of overhanging trees or trees which may produce high voltage arching if they grow too close to power lines. This is a statutory duty they have.Fountains` surveyors regularly contact us if they identify trees on Council land which have the potential to cause interruption to the power supply and always operate with our permission. I have met the team currently at Stairfoot Lane and will continue to monitor that the work they are doing is satisfactory and that the area is left in an orderly and safe condition.I hope this clarifies the situation.RegardsJustinWoodlands Officer
