Jack Daly. No - you,re quite right. That was the New Peacock. There's quite a bit about it on this site and some good photos on Leodis. When it first used to go to Elland Road, in the late 60s, the Old Peacock (shown in the photos above) had been demolished and replaced by the pub which is still there now. I used to think it was very strange that the 'Old Peacock' was a new building whilst the 'New Peacock' was an old building!
there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

What was a disgrace was the demolition of the rows of Back to back houses each side of the bottom of Wesley Street (The Hoxtons and The Canterburys) to make a car park for Leeds United fans a few hours every fortnight. These were perfectly sound compact warm dwellings which would have done perfectly well for single parents ect. The council then took their attentions to the other side of Elland Rd. opposite the Dog Track (which had been promised to be some sort of leisure area for the general public by Leeds council) and compulsory purchased the area again for a car park. Since the demise of Uniteds fortunes the car parks have never been full. (Rant over)

On a similar theme, I know there was a 'Peacock Pit' somewhere around where the New Peacock pub stood, ie. in the area that was known as Islington. This pit will have been gone by the late 1880s I am guessing. I have seen it on an ordnance survey map somewhere, but I can't find it now. Anybody have any maps with this on it?I have a theory that it was maybe the pit's name that was taken also for the two pubs, which both appeared in the 1840s, as I am fairly sure the pit will have been there first. After the pubs, obviously the peacock name was also taken as a nickname by Leeds United. Thanks for any help.

Hmm, thanks for this info. I have looked at the other thread. I guess it is possible the pubs were there before the pit. Old Peacock was 1842 if I remember correctly and the New, shortly after. If pits were still appearing in the mid-late 1800s then the question becomes, why were the pubs named 'Peacock'? I can find no reference to a proprietor of that surname at either pub.
