Perhaps Tetley's really was better then! According to an old friend of mine (Laurie Graham) who kept the Old Red Lion,Garden Gate and latterly Town Hall Tavern....Tetley's started it's demise around the mid 90's.He was renowned for his excellent beer keeping and wasn't afraid to "send the stuff back" if not up to scratch-he drank it himself. The quality deteriorated quite rapidly after that....much to many people's dismay.I couldn't stomach it towards the end sadly.......having been weaned on the stuff. Apologies for veering off thread a bit.

I haven't tasted it myself yet , but I have it on good (i.e CAMRA members) authority that the 'Tetley's' being brewed now in Wolverhampton is actually better than what was latterly being produced in Hunslet.
there are 10 types of people in the world. Those that understand ternary, those that don't and those that think this a joke about the binary system.

I can well believe that drapesy......seeing as the stuff was beginning to taste like dishwater at the back end ! I might just try a gargle soon and see how it stands up.........that's if I can find any these days on wickets....I would of tried it earlier but was a bit "scared"...it could of been awful. (agreed on your thoughts !)

My mate who worked there told me fresh brewed beer should have been barrelled then put in the warm room for a few days then shipped to the pubs to be stored to mature in the pubs cellar. I believe in the 90's they started a “just in time” supply system and anyone who has brewed their own will tell you that beer needs to be left to mature for a better beer.

Very true tyke.....one of my best mates worked there too man and boy and confirms this.....the beer has to "settle" and be kept at an optimum temperature to maintain the best qualities.Cleanliness of cellar and lines was vitally important too.Sadly too,a lot of the older, experienced hands got out of the trade back then due to spiralling costs, rent hikes etc hence cellar management standards declined in many pubs, all of which won't have helped some of Tetley's popular products.Apologies again for being off original thread somewhat..does happen a lot i suppose as stories develop.Quietly smiling seeing as we are discussing a product no longer available from the original building yet the art etc that is,was the original topic !

Very many years back I went on a trip round Tetley Brewery and at the end we could have (free!) some Tetley beer to drink. I don't know what type it was but it was the only time I've ever liked beer, presumably because it was still very fresh having not travelled. I never really liked it, sharp metallic to my palate.I once enjoyed a pint of Tetleys Imperial (I think) in Whitby many moons ago.

Well to be honest that wouldn't be difficult, never did like Tetley's even when it was at its supposed best. Tetley Walkers from across the hills was, on the other hand, a really enjoyable brew.
