White Horse Street that was off Boar Lane.

While doing a search for something else on the Leodis website I came across a 1970s photo of a scene on Boar Lane that I found interesting. This is the link to the photo in Leodis:- http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ... 3_168118It was the mention of White Horse Street that caught my attention as I have clearly forgotten that street (and also the nearby Alfred Street and Gascoigne Street as seen on a map that I shall post shortly). Those streets no longer exist (at least by name) and are now part of the Trevelyan Square development. My recollection of what was in Leeds is rubbish! Thankfully there are knowledgeable members on Secret Leeds and also the Leodis and other websites.

This map was taken from the 1964-1970 1:2500 map in the Old Maps UK website. It shows White Horse Street about in the centre as the sharply bent street running from Boar Lane to Wormald's Yard. Alfred Street is to the left of White Horse Street and between the two (but less clear) is the short Gascoigne Street. There seems to be (though I'm unsure) no longer anything left of Wormald's Yard, though there is a road that seems to have no name (it may possibly be called Commercial Court or is at least related to Commercial Court) that runs off Lower Briggate and ends at some stairs to New Station Street.Clicking on the image (at least with my browser) will enlarge it.Edit added on November 16 2013. I've just noticed that the map shows some tramways, but as the last trams ran in Leeds a few years earlier (1959 I think) the map will be wrong. As part of the tramways ends abruptly at a grid line (and others do that when viewing a large area of the 1964-1970 map) then it seems the map is made up from bits of other maps! I assume though that the other details on the map are correct.

For interest I thought I would post this that was taken from the 1850 1:1056 map in the excellent Old Maps UK website. It shows how different much of the area looked then before the railway was built to the east of the station. There is a White Horse Hotel on Boar Lane, so I assume that White Horse Street may have been named after that hotel. There was though no White Horse Street then but there was a White Horse Yard. Of other interest in the map is the Mill Goit and the location of the West Bar stone (that is near the top left corner).
