The mills and chimney behind is Farnley Low Mills (woolen)The gasometer stood right here at the side of Wortley beckhttp://goo.gl/maps/4CJ0iIt's just a case of getting our bearings and looking at maps to get the location now. 24th July 1956. Dunlop and Ranken iron and steel stockyards on Whitehall Road. View looks east over cows in a field, the factory and the Kirkdale housing estate. Beyond are the chimneys of industrial Leeds. This photo is taken from Wood Lane which runs in to Whitehall Rd at the entrance of the stockyards,at about the time of the photo, a new shed was built at the side of the shed you see on the left, it was 400yds long, it was was like a wind tunnel down there, before the roof was on the shed the overhead crane was blown from the front of the building right to the bottom end,if the stops had'nt been on the crane rail it would have run off the end. Jimmy Skafe was the foreman on the job,at that time he was living in the Kirkdales.http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ... Y=FULL29th July 1980. View of Whitehall Road showing the Dunlop & Ranken Steel Service Centre. The junction with Branch Road is on the left. Part of an advertising hoarding for Marlboro Cigarettes can be seen on the right.http://www.leodis.net/display.aspx?reso ... SPLAY=FULL

24th September 1946.View of Wortley Beck as it flows between steep brick and stone retaining walls, just north of Whitehall Road. On the right is a gasometer, part of the Corporation Gas Works. To the left is a brick building. A pipe crosses the beck farther down.

The Farnley one would be a lot easier to spot if Ringway's was on it, but it hadn't been built then, so my argument is flawed.

I noticed you can also see Gibraltor barracks above Lovell Park. And although I'd seen the photo below many time, I could never quite work out where about it was on New Briggate. I know which scene I prefer. P.S has the figure on top of the building featured on S.L before?Leo is our roof top figure specialist Phill - the lovely mock Tudor shops were from opposite the side entrance to the Wren's to just below opposite the Dispensary. They formed an impressive parade but were not actually all that old.The distant building, centre right, with the white dome, is the former Poole's surgical footwear place, and IINM has been in the process of conversion to flats etc for years and years - very strange for such a handy location.
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

I'm slowly updating the photos on the main thread. I've actually just finished the bit about these buildings. It made me think - we needed the ring road because the motor car was becoming more popular. All the local Leeds stations closed like Armley Canal Road, Osmandthorpe and others. Beeching killed off all the branch lines like the Wetherby, and Pudsey Loop. The superb Leeds tramway was ripped up. Leeds became congested with cars, we needed the ring road to ease car congestion. We bulldozed sound, solid, and fine buildings like this to build a great concrete crater around the City. Now only 50 years after the ring road was built, it is decaying, has concrete cancer, and looks a real mess. Traffic congestion is horrendous. And we still don't have a modern transport scheme, but we do have the same dozy Leeds planners with ideas the like Trolley bus. You knew that one was coming!
