As a lifelong transport enthusiast I love trolleybuses BUT I'm also a realist and I'm one of the fiercest opponents of this utter farce which beggars belief. Hours of debate can be condensed into the three words of the ludicrous title "NEW Generation Transport" - the previous honourable generations were respectfully laid to rest nationwide in the early 1970s, the once splendid Bradford system being the last. During the Headingley area protests of yesterday morning members of the Public were interviewed in the street by Radio Leeds and one dear lady proclaimed that "I used to travel on trolleybuses when I was younger and they were wonderful - I'd love to see them come to Headingley." I'm afraid if she's dreaming of a double deck AEC with East Lancashire body taking up a sensible amount of the limited road space she's going to wake up to an awful disappointment.Digressing slightly, but still on the theme of "publicity spin" which is inflicted on us by the "experts", I was on a stationary bus in Park Lane when a purple slug (no Ftr and streetcar nonsense any more) pulled up alongside. Glancing at all the expensive and irrelevant vynils on the side - "Hyperlink" and "every 7 minutes" etc etc I noticed a little vynil about maybe six inches diameter - this purported to be the slug speaking and informed us that "I'M CARED FOR BY OUR BRAMLEY TEAM." I'm afraid that our transport organisation these days is being provided by adult infants and I despair !!
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

There is a full page notice towards the back of todays YEP listing various works that need permission, many of them 'conservation area' works in Headingley. However, two items south of the river caught my attention. Not only content with forcing this white elephant on us in the face of overwhelming public objections, the facades of both The Adelphi and The Garden Gate are set to be butchered to "install overhead line fixings" to both buildings. You really couldn't make it up, could you?

Indeed raveydavey you COULDN'T make it up !!    Well, on the assumption from Doom that this farce is eventually forced upon us surely its not rocket science to employ a consultant to solve the problem. Such a learned type would, at enormous expense, ultimately come to the triumphant conclusion that by placing two or three wiring support columns (extended to line up with the trolley power cable run) on the opposite side of the road at the locations of these two magnficent historic buildings the butchery would be avoided - FREE OF CHARGE !! I think I'll be an elderly consultant, might be a corporate lunch or two in it surely !!

Words fail, it's been said many many times already.I think people are lost for words at the pig headed ignorance of this council. No matter what is said, the amount of opposition. The Council will force this through whatever the cost. All that remains now is to take bets on how many years it will be before people are calling for a modern transport scheme for this City. Leeds being the last major city without one.Even the incompetent council will have to conceded it is nothing more than a bus. How long, 5 years after follybus completion perhaps?

This despite the fact that that site lies right next to the railway line..?Pie in the sky, or an ambitious plan to join up two hated projects that the people of Leeds have said that they don't want?
