King Street and Wellington Street name signs.

This photo (which I took on September 10 2013) shows the King Street name sign but also the King Street name in stone (?) on the building wall. I suspect that the latter name sign may be quite old. The location is at the junction of King Street with Wellington Street, as seen in the next photo that I will post. Just out of view to the left in the photo here is the name Wellington Street that is also in stone along with a modern sign. Both of the street names in stone can be seen in another photo I shall post.

This photo (taken September 10 2013) shows the location of both street name signs in stone above the entrance at the junction of Wellington Street and King Street.

This photo (taken September 10 2013) shows a close-up of both street name signs in stone. A nearby large 'To Let' sign made it difficult to get a good shot showing both the old and new Wellington Street name signs.

Wonderful pictures Leodian, and a revelation to me as I'd never noticed the stone ones !! I know that the black and white ones are certainly very old, and at the bottom of King Street (Metropole side) is a superb larger one incorporating directions to the Town Hall etc. This one was definitely there in the early 1930s, and features in transport pictures of the time.

I wonder though how old the sign is as it does not look particularly weathered? The information would now be on a sign on a pole, with the sign pointing the way.

Thanks Leodian - yes it does indeed look in good order - it hasn't always, and I'll try to find one or two old transport pictures which will give a clue to how long its been there, but I'm pretty sure pre WW2.

Must be post 1940 as the museum was on Park Row til it was bombed in 1940,so basically to sometime after the museum relocated to where the library is now.

Hi cnosni. As the sign does not specifically mention the museum I wonder if its 'Municipal Buildings' part refers to the Civic Hall?

The Municipal Building is now the Library and Art Gallery. It was built when the council started filling up the Town Hall. The Police were headquartered there for a long time.
