This month, to celebrate 'Treasures Revealed in Leeds', Secret Leeds takes our Dear Readers behind the scenes at Holy Trinity Church, Boar Lane, taking advantage of the scaffolding on the tower, which is about to come down, to take you to places that few people will ever get to go.Pic by Munki.

Holy Trinity Church, a Grade 1 listed building, was built between 1721 to 1727, architect William Etty of York (who also landscaped the eastern approach to Temple Newsam house). The construction of the church was paid for by local businessmen & merchants including the great Ralph Thoresby himself, the father of Leeds historians. The church was consecrated on August 10th 1727.The picture above shows Holy Trinity with its original wooden spire, which was damaged by a ‘hurricane’ on January 7th, 1839, & later demolished. The spire was replaced by the new three stage stone spire, by architect Robert Chantrell (who also built the Parish Church).It was current restoration to this tower which allowed the Secret Leeds team access to some of the Secret Places in this grand old building.Picture from

Through the church hall, up the narrowest wooden staircase in the world, we stand in the base of the church tower, with the favourite thing for every Secret Leeds fan to see, an open door into a tunnel...Pic by Reflex Pictures.

The roofspace directly over the nave, lit by about fifteen mag-lites provided by the marvellous Imprint Theatre Company (based at Holy Trinity). There are lightbulbs up there. They don't work.Pic by Reflex Pictures.

From this point, the only way to get higher up, was via the electric lift up the outside of the scaffolding. Not good for people without a head for heights, so our photographer stayed with the (relative) safety of the roof while we ascended the scaffolding.
