Years back an older middle-aged chum said that when he came to Leeds, he took lodgings in Headingley and then later West Park.Him and another bedsit dweller used to try a new pub each week (thursday evenings). The (older) husband of the couple who owned the place asked if he could come along too.But the one he described intrigued being very early social housing ('houses fit for heros'). Heard mention of two pubs up there somewhere, long gone I think. One was on Vesper Road, the other somewhere in the Hawksworth estate.Any info / images ?

The Woodway was on Vesper Road, there isnt any actual pub on the Hawksworth Estate proper, however there is the 'club' on the estate. Also there was the Hark to Rover on Spen Lane and there still is The Dalesman and The Bridge at the top and bottom of Butcher Hill respectively.

there were three pubs built all about the same time owned by John Smiths The Broadway on Dewsbury roadThe Ringway just off the ring road at HorseforthThe Woodway on Vesper road just off the Hawksworth estateAll three were big pubs with large lounges or concert rooms back in the early seventies I played all three had to be in before seven or no seatsThe Woodway was the main pub for most of the folk on the Hawkswoth estate and back in the seventies the tap room was always full of darts and domino's players it was a very lively pub and people came from all around the area on a Friday and Saturday nights by the late seventies though it was starting to go down hill
