On clear(ish) days the Emley Moor mast in the distance is very obvious when going down Scott Hall Road into Leeds such that it makes it seem nearer than it is, or perhaps it is nearer than it is.

True, you wouldn't think that the transmiter was about 15 miles away from Scott Hall playing fields.
