At first sight I thought this [edit - ta] "Kirkstall'But it's about 8 miles from the Abbey.Any information on when and why the name change? I don't know.Would suit Train Spotter

According to http://www.emmerdale.me.uk/emmerdale.htm , it is now called Creskeld Hall, and is where emmerdale is now filmed . It apaprently gets its name from a village that used to be nearby, and is now part of Arthington

The Kirskill name in your photo is very interesting Jogon as I had not heard of it before. I occasionally walk on part of Creskeld Lane in a circular walk from Arthington Lane/Black Hill Road that comes out onto Creskeld Lane on coming out of the interesting Crag Wood. I always though take the road left and have never gone right that passes Creskeld Lodge. I see from maps that Creskeld Hall is set well back off the road.In some information I've found it states of Creskeld Hall:- "History: in 1240 Hugo de Creskeld granted the manor to the Abbots of Kirkstall. Item formerly known as "Kirkskill Hall". I wonder therefore what is the correct spelling. Is it Kirskill or Kirkskill?

Never heard of it before.When the Old Otley line linked up there was / is a property between the Huby/Otley line just over from Creskeld Hall. Think I have seen some old map which noted Creskeld Hall or prev name was a much older 'moated hall' back in the day.I read that the Kirkstall Monks did some deals with Lord Arthington to help mitigate the effects of Henry 8th's dissolution. At that time Sir William Cavendish gained great wealth from his position in the Exchequer and also, as it was alleged, from unfairly taking advantage of the Dissolution of the Monasteries.That's how they came to own the 30,000 acre Bolton Abbey Estate (and... Chatsworth).
