Its a "through" building from Kirkgate, and the other side is next to the Post Office in New York Street - up an alleyway where many unsavoury and criminal characters used to congregate day and evening - most menacing. I can't remember ever going in the pub even in its happier days. Before the Indian restaurant (over the New York Street archway) there used to be the Royal Oak Cafe which did superb breakfasts - highest cholesterol level value in Leeds - and we used to go in there when we were "on the buses."

There used to be a young lad serving the meals and it was obvious that he was retarded in some degree and very feminine looking in the face. What upset me a bit was that he used to wear a full length ladies' floral "housecoat" type of garment and I thought it was humiliating for him - did you remember this ??
