You can just see the Dalex sign in the shop window. I love these old adverts. And here is the bigger picture, minus Jogon and alterations. The building you can just glimpse is Dysons, the Viaduct hotel can be seen near the bridge. I wonder when those buildings were demolished? Certainly as far back as the early 1970's I can recall that just been a muddy car park. Here's today's view for comparison, the old shops looking far better than the red brick monstrosity that replaced them.http://goo.gl/maps/Quh7EI find Briggate to be a funny street. I never think of this bottom end as Briggate. I always have to check the online map to see what it's called, likewise I feel the same about New Briggate at the top end. The only part that feels like ''proper'' Briggate is the part in between Duncan Street and Eastgate/Headrow.Eastgate is another strange street. I'm never sure where it turns into the Headrow, and I've always been tempted to call the whole street the Headrow from Millgarth It's funny how you can live in a city all your life, and know it very well, but some street names always seem to catch you out.

When I first saw the photo I was 99% certain it was Briggate down near the Viaduct pub. I had to blow the photo up to make sure it was the Viaduct pub to make sure. For some reason I also thought it could be down Kirkgate looking towards the rail viaduct. The buildings look very similar down there, anyone else think so?http://goo.gl/maps/Mbd01

The edge of the building on the right reminded me of the "quoins" on the old White Cloth Hall.

This is the link to the Google Street view I got:- http://goo.gl/maps/gjyEkI am wondering what the wording states? The first bit seems to be 'Manchester' then a word that seems to start with a 'W''. It is what the final word is that intrigues me. I am probably seeing a word that is not acctually there but it does seem to be 'Semen' though I doubt that it is. Very red-faced me if it is not that word!

Ha ha, I'm liking your red face Leo I can't recall what the sign says now, we have covered it on S.L way back in the past. I even had photos of it myself. I'm not sure if they are still on Secret Leeds. But I know I deleted them off flickr when I had a spring clean a while ago.I know the shop was actually a Manchester Jewellers, perhaps someone else can find the relevant page, perhaps it's buried deep in the 'skulls thread''

In part of an earlier post Phill stated "Eastgate is another strange street. I'm never sure where it turns into the Headrow, and I've always been tempted to call the whole street the Headrow from Millgarth". That reminded me that it was only quite recently that I found out that what I thought was part of The Headrow from about opposite the courts is in fact called Westgate. I really must be more observant! PS. Cheers Phill for your immediate post above mine.
