It might be wise to take a closer look what's underneath you the next time you sit on a park bench. There are still a few of the old cast iron benches to be found around Leeds, but I've not seen many with this snakes head design before. Any ideas where this little snake lurks away? And for bonus points.Does anyone know where you can spot this elaborate dragon iron work?    And to go with that dragon, who could resist a bit of P.P& M audio entertainment for a Saturday night...Perhaps me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPDAEIub ... re=related

Unless I'm imagining it, the stereo version you've mentioned shows just how basic (all left and right and no centre) the earliest stereo recordings were to the present sophisticated wonders, although we thought the first stereos were nothing short of miraculous and "real." Remember the earliest stereo decks with separate "plug in" pick up heads (one with 78 stylus and one with LP - Decca) or the more numerous "turnover" cartridges with two stylii ?? - a fascinating and dramatic development in home entertainment.
There's nothing like keeping the past alive - it makes us relieved to reflect that any bad times have gone, and happy to relive all the joyful and fascinating experiences of our own and other folks' earlier days.

Hi Blakey, swerving off thread wildly here but it's an interesting subject, and we at S.L are a learned lot. The remasters of those early recordings certainly sound better indeed. But they aren't true stereo, I was reading about it when I was looking up the Beatles remasters herehttp://musicworthbuying.wordpress.com/2009/09/23/the-beatles-remasters-fake-stereo-vs-real-mono/It's something called Duophonic (fake stereo) a sound process by which a monaural recording is turned into a kind of "fake stereo" by splitting the signal into two channels, delaying the left and the right channels by means of delay lines and other circuits, desynchronizing the two channels by fractions of a second, and cutting the bass frequencies in one channel with a high-pass filter, then cutting the treble frequencies in the other channel with a low-pass filter. The result was an artificial stereo effect, without giving the listener the true directional sound characteristics of real stereo. In some cases, the effect was enhanced with reverb and other technical tricks, sometimes adding stereo echo to mono tracks in an attempt to fool the listener.A lot more about it herehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duophonic

I'll add a few clues to this later in the day if no one gets anywhere near
