according to the metropolitan police website'Black Maria' was the nickname for secure police vans with separate locked cubicles, used for the transportation of prisoners. The name is said to have come from a large and powerful black lodging-house keeper named Maria Lee, who helped constables of Boston, Massachusetts in the 1830s when they needed to escort drunks to the cells.

A few month ago I had found the original blueprints for the town hall.. in my loft. I'm currently searching around for the rest of the pieces (They're all crumbling) and piecing them together. It's rather interesting to see the amount of un-used space that the hall has at the time. I may still be un-used or in use since first development, but I'll get back to work putting it together.

Great photos munki, from top to toes. One question-Given that Leeds is a city, why do we have a TOWN hall?

Easy one, that, Stevief. The Town Hall was opened by Queen Victoria in 1858, when Leeds was still a Town. It didn't become a city by Royal Charter until 13th February 1893, by which time, I guess people had got use to 'Town Hall'.
