Looking for a panoramic photo of Leeds

Post by blackprince »

Hi,
I want to illustrate a blog I am writing that mentions someone's first impression of the city as they drove in on the A62 from Huddersfield in 1959/60 . ( No they didn't do a U-turn and drive back home!)
I am looking for a panoramic /skyline photo of the city taken in the 1950s or early 60s ideally looking over the city from the South-(Gildersome Birstall direction).
I would be grateful for any ideas. If you can think of one online please send me a link or maybe you took one yourself.
There must be something in Leodis but I haven't found it yet.

It used to be said that the statue of the Black Prince had been placed in City Square , near the station, pointing South to tell all the southerners who've just got off the train to b****r off back down south!

Try looking on Leodis a photographic archive of Leeds, run by Leeds libraries, 1000s of photos of Leeds and surrounding areas, you can search by year past and present, street, buildings etc and buy any of the photos, very interesting site to look through

Thanks Jann.
Not had much luck with finding a suitable image among the 1000s on Leodis. The search facility is very limited. It's OK for finding photos of specific places or buildings but can't handle the type of search I need like "Panorama or skyline photo of the city taken from a certain direction in the late 50's."
I found some other interesting shots though.
I found lots of modern panorama shots online but a lot of them are licensable stock photos.
I even tried using AI but not much luck with that either. I am looking for a needle in a haystack.

Could Leodis help if you contact them at all or perhaps the Central Library in town? Apart from Leodis I wouldn’t have a clue where you might find the photos you want! Sorry I can’t be of further help, hopefully someone might know

Thanks for that. I found another contender so I've now got 2 to choose from.

There's always Flickr. Clifford Stead has quite a good collection at https://www.flickr.com/photos/cliffords ... 263636461/. Obviously you'd need to check with him about copyright.

I don't know if this is any good but it's a good view nonetheless.

Thanks to you both for the suggestions. There are some cracking photos of Leeds in days gone by in that Flickr collection.
