Coronavirus cases reporting in the Yorkshire Evening Post.

For quite some while now the Yorkshire Evening Post has been reporting the number of deaths of people in Leeds that had coronavirus. This reminded me of the local newspaper reports some decades back of the condition of patients in Seacroft Hospital (I don't recall if there were reports on patients elsewhere). Relatives would have a case number so though patients were not publicly named the relatives could find out out the latest condition of a patient (most homes did not have a phone then).

I won't be the only one to remember when the 8am news read by John Snagge or Alvar Liddell would begin with something like

This is the Home Service of the BBC. First an SOS message for Joe Soap, last heard of in Timbuctoo. Would Mr Joe Soap, last heard of in Timbuctoo, telephone the General Infirmary at Leeds, telephone number Leeds 12345, where his brrothe Pears Soap is dangerously ill. I'll repeat that, would Mr Joe Soap...

I think they were still doing this as recently as the 90's. I remember hearing messages like this on the BBC Radio 4 6 o'clock news which I used to listen to stuck in the car on my daily commute. They probably stopped when the BBC decided it was no longer a public service broadcaster.

I recall this very well, as a school friend was in isolation at Seacroft Hospital - I don't think that the service was available to people who were just in hospital for a short time -

I always thought Killingbeck was the isolation hospital for infectious diseases. Was Seacroft hospital also an isolation hospital?
When the Nightingale hospitals were introduced recently I thought they would be the modern equivalent of the old isolation hospitals.

You are correct bout Killingbeck being an isolation hospice but Seacroft was not. i recall taking my son to have his tonsils out about 19666 and then some years later visiting an elderly relative there

In the mid-1970s I visited a colleague who was isolated at Seacroft. He'd rescued a child from a pond in Farnley and had contracted some form of meningitis from the filth in the pond. The isolation was not total, or visitors would have been banned, of course, but he was certainly kept completely separate from all the other patients. I think also that the use of some hospitals changed over time. Around 2000 I visited an elderly friend there who had dementia.

Nothing really to do with the subject of the thread but my mother's last full-time job before she retired (1980?) was as the manager of the nurses' residence at Seacroft. She was the first post holder without a nursing background.

I don't think Seacroft was ever the type of isolation hospital mothballed between epidemics but I'm not sure about that
