Does anyone recall the Green Shield Stamp Shop on Eastgate about half way up opposite what was then the Yorkshire Hussars Pub.
It was a narrow shop and you had to go down a couple of steps or so on entry. I wonder what it is today ?.
For those who are too young Green Shield Stamps were given out at various retailers with your purchase and you stuck the stamps in a book provided. when you had a book full or more off you would go and choose a Kettle , Iron. Crockery etc. The more stamps you had the better / more selection you had to choose from. Don't think this lasted for very long

Yes I am sure it did become Argos.

"20 books for a Camera " and about 20 pages per book, that's a lot of stamps to have to collect.

Argos was 19 - 21 Eastgate. The first catalogue it appears in is this one from Autumn 1978: https://issuu.com/retromash/docs/argos-no10-1978-autumn

That's interesting mhoulden as I would not have guessed that Argos as a company has been around for at least so long! :o

The Green shield catalogue became a cash only one, and after a time the catalogue was re branded as Argos in the early 70's, the first catalogue was released in 73.
