Stephensons wallpaper Shop

On a short visit to Leeds last week I was driving along Hunslet Road and was amazed to see Stephenson's wallpaper shop still operating. The one and only time I was in there was just under 60 years ago and I expected the firm to have been swallowed up and altered among all the building around there but it even still has the same type of window displays as all of those years ago.

Apologies if this Company or subject has been mentioned before.

Pretty much bang opposite the bottom of Joseph Street. I think it has been mentioned before but I regularly get that deja vu feeling.

Did you find/visit the Angel?

When I was a child we lived nearby in Pitfield Place and I remember it from then. I too am surprised it is still there, maybe there's a hard core of loyal customers.
One of my memories from then (1960-ish) is of playing out one day just next to this shop on a bit of waste ground and hearing a motor bike coming up the road. I thought at the time, what a great noise it made, and I've been a bike fan since.
There was a little cafe on the end of the parade nearby and we used to buy frozen "ice pops" I think they were called.

No T.B. Did not have the time to go into town so missed the Angel and the Gravestones by the Parish Church. will be up in Stringer in about six weeks time and have added a visit to a shop in what was King Edward Street where I worked in 1950 to my list.
Am intending to show them where the hidden tap is down in the basement alley that used to connect the Empire Theatre to the Cross Arcade. I used it once and cut half of K. E. street and Queen Victoria St for a day and a half.

I'm quire sure that Stephenson''s well deserved success if the obliging service and quite amazingly large selection of decent wallpapers, and handy access and steets to park. Even though I live in Headingley this flat enjoys many of their wall coverings. :) :)

volvojack - when you're here again do go into Cross Arcade and look upwards there you will find, despite Harvey Nichols prententiousness, some lovely lettering in the red brick - it reads "Empire Palace an was the back entrance to that beautfiul theatre where so many of we old 'uns enjoyed such fabulous shows. :( :(

Will do Blakey. That was not only the service way for the Empire but allowed "Stars" to leave without having too much hassle. It went down a flight of steps and then the passage up to the Theatre was level with the basement doors of the shops. Maybe it is not there anymore.
