Wooden pavement on Commercial Street in 1872.

In John Mayhall's 'Annals of Yorkshire' vol III it states for May 8 1872:-

"The Leeds Corporation entered into an agreement with the Wooden Pavement Company to pave Commercial Street with wooden pavement, similar to that laid down in Ludgate Hill, London.".

Commercial Street seems likely to have therefore been an important street then. Assuming that the work was done I wonder how long the wooden pavement lasted?

I can think of at least one street in London that still has its wooden [road] cobbles. Although they now have a layer of tarmac over them they are still there.
This article is worth a read.....

Thanks for that post liits :). The linked item is an interesting read.

I wonder if any of the current streets of Leeds cover a wooden base?
