There was also a very small news stand late on Saturday nights near the front canopy of the Queens Hotel. You could get Sunday's News of the World there, certainly before Midnight. The timetables for the very extensive Night bus services (double day fares) were in a wood and glass display case on the railings of the GPO near Infirmary Street.

You could buy the Empire News, a Sunday newspaper round about 6.30p.m. on Saturday night. The football match reports only went up to half-time. The paper was printed in Manchester and later merged with the News of the World.

There was an article on the Green Post in YEP a few weeks ago following the retirement of one of the old 'sellers'. Apparently they had a mobile printing press in a van at Elland Road and used to knock them out from there. Still no idea how they collated all the results so quickly though!

The Yorkshire Evening Post (YEP) has been stating for some while that it was to print a 'Green Post Rebooted' supplement covering classic Leeds United matches. An 8 page 'Green Post Rebooted Issue 1' supplement is in today's YEP (May 23 2020) but I was disappointed that it was printed on the usual white paper not on green paper like the Green Final used to be.

With the passing of time I cannot now recall if the long defunct Yorkshire Evening News had a special sports edition equivalent to the Green Final.

I recall buying a copy from the van after a game and reading all but the late kick off results and even having a report of the Leeds United home game that I had just watched! You could sometimes even watch the paper being printed in the van!

Yes,wow, brought back memories,i was raised on Parkside View(off Church Lane)Meanwood and the final football scores were read out at 17.00 on BBC,i would then take a leisurely fifteen minute stroll down into the centre of Meanwwood and hang(can't remember the name of the newsagents)with about forty or so people until roughly 18.00 waiting for the van to arrive with "The Green Final"or as some would call it the "Green Post",i would then pass by the fish and chip shop(The Frying Pan)to collect my order of fishcake and chips then head home for a good read..ahhh

Just reading the previous posts brought back so many memories. regarding the football scores at Elland Road on a Saturday afternoon, first the half times scores of the first division were shown on the walls of the two main stands you needed a programme as the spaces for the scores matched. as for further results after the match yes there was a van with some sort of Teleprinter putting the scores in the "Stop Press on the back page of an ordinary Yorks. Post. There was the "Green Final" sold but it may have been on sale a little later, maybe some one can clarify that.

As regards waiting in City Square and Infirmary Street for the late night buses this was an event in it's own right. As the patrons left the various dance halls they assemble into the queues You could guess there would be about a couple of hundred, mainly folks in their early twenties dispersing around the Square. As i lived in Beeston i would be be in the Middleton queue because that went up Dewsbury Road and i could drop off. From memory i think there was a standard fare regardless of where you got off. again from memory our lot were on Infirmary street outside the Norwich Union building. (now disappeared) Amazingly there was very little trouble even though i would say just about all would have had some alcohol. There was a lot of noise there but as there were girls also would say that quite a few romances began even if it was possibly only for this one night, or morning as it would be by then. The paper seller would patrol the various queues selling the Sunday edition of the Reynolds News although i could be mistaken about that. remember that at the same time an old man used to stand at the end of Boar Lane holding out the green final and shouting something like "Football Resurs Cum Gerry". One thing lads would not want at midnight is a paper, sports.
apparently what Green finals these lads had left they took up to the Yorkshire Post Depot on Albion St.
Good Old Days

P.s. Just found that i had already posted similar awhile back.

"Could I have a bed near the window please Nurse."

Can't remember the name of the BBC. announcer who read out the footballs scores 5pm. each Saturday in the 40s/50s. if the home team won he would say the home team had won his voice would drop for the away team. if a match was a draw then even voice and if an away win then a slight upturn of his voice as he read it out. Thousands listened closely as Football Pools were extremely popular. the thing was to try and forecast eight draws by teams playing on the Saturday. This was probably the only way the ordinary working man would ever be rich. Sadly some collectors and agents collecting the cash and coupon would pocket the lot week after week, not sending it to the Pools operators Vernons and Littlewoods. This would only come to light after a punter had a win. Sadly this happened quite often
When United were playing away my brother and I sometimes went to see Bradford City play at Park Avenue. then buy the Bradford sports paper on the way home. the Pink 'Un.
Our Dad would always meet us after a match and unless we were visiting relatives who lived quite close to Elland Road he would see us back home just before that he would stop for a couple of pints in the Dog and Gun. we had crisps and a bottle of pop, then home too read the Green Final that our Dad had got inside.it was quite boring really as there was only a couple of pages about sport if I remember correctly.
