A 'Monday Retro' feature on page 27 of the Yorkshire Evening Post (YEP) today (March 2 2015) has an item about a Yorkshire Film Archive footage showing some scenes in the centre of Leeds at the "turn of the 20th century". The item gives a link to the film which is
http://www.tinyurl.com/qgvupe8. The film is dated 1898 and is a little over 2 minutes long and is fascinating trying to work out where the scenes were filmed. Some are on Leeds Bridge (as mentioned in the YEP item) but I am very unsure of where the others show (some have a Boar Lane look but that is pure guesswork on my part).

I think the stationary shot showing trams (some at least steam) is from city Square towards Boar Lane. The building to the extreme right appears to be the predecessor of the present day Observatory. The shots taken from (probably) a moving tram are also of Boar Lane, but I am less certain of this identification.

The shot from the moving tram is certainly Boar Lane. The point in the film 2 min 16 secs can be seen the wall which fronted Holy Trinity Church and, on the edge of the pavement, a street lamp with advertising in the glass [and this seems to have been a common feature if you look at some of the other street lamps]. The advert is for DYE. I don't know if it is the name Dye or for a clothes dye, the film is too indistinct.
Leodis has a pic showing the same lamp - again too indistinct to figure out exactly what Dye is but I'm guessing that it is for a brand of clothes dye as a quick trawl of some trade directories turns up only a few individuals named Dye and no businesses.
