SecretLeeds - History, culture and architecture in Leeds

My sister works for the council quite high up and she's been saying for a while that there are rumours this 172 metre building could be resurrected(60m higher than bridgewater, even the Lumiere second tower would be slightly taller)

I have doubts though because this was also mentioned a couple of years ago and then nothing again. People maybe putting 2+2 together after hearing about the 30bill investment plan...i'd like to see it though but wont happen.
Not sure if it is the same site or different this was the site in 2008.

Anyone know what lays at the original site now if anything?

If that's the site on Wellington Street well there is some fresh building work going on, but I don't know what. i think that before the original twin plan was halted the foundations had been established to a depth of 50 metres - may be wrong with that figure but perhaps such was necessary to support two such giant tower buildings.

I'm fairly sure that the work that has restarted on the Wellington Street site is for a far less impressive generic office block, but I could be wrong...

There are other sites in the city centre though - the former International Pool site and down to Wellington Street is crying out for something doing with it, as is the former Fletcher Motors site off the M621.

Thanks cnosni - oh dear, yet another unwise choice for a name - albeit only a few hundred yards of misleading inaccuracy.
Why not Wellington Square or Whitehall Square I wonder ?? Unless of course its some kind of tribute to the long gone Central Station but that's hardly relevant today.

Could be a combination of the old station and the word "Central" giving the impression of a prominent and therefore important location

Yes I'm sure that could be the purpose of the name cnosni, but I still think its well misleading as the site may be important yes and, I suppose, marginally prominent - but confusion with the famous important and really prominent City Square is almost certain - especially as the Central Station itself is sadly a thing of the distant past.

Thanks uncle mick - what a simply superb collection of breathtaking and informative pictures. Regardless of the suitability or otherwise of the intended name, I must say that its a wonderful project compared with the original intention. If I remember correctly there were to be two towers, one of thirty plus storeys and the other of over fifty. Surely they would have blocked out much light from each other and from the existing towers that they were too close.to. Anyhow, from the looks of it this will be a really nice development - but I'd be no good as a civil engineer responsible for mains services, plumbing etc in addition to the properties already there.
