The BHS store on Kirkstall Lane (next to Kirkstall Bridge) closed today. The building is being demolished and the area redeveloped as the inevitable retail park. It's a rather undistinguished 30s brick building but has had an interesting history as Thrift, Clover, Allders and recently as BHS when Allders went bust. It seemed to be a discount store under the Allders name (I have certainly had some bargains from there) and has had a similar role with BHS while gradually falling into disrepair with leaks all over the place and one of the tattiest and grimmest shop restaurants I've ever had lunch in. The landmark clock went about ten years ago as related here: http://www.secretleeds.com/forum/Messag ... readID=222. It was rather empty today, with a few furniture, lighting and clothing bargains to be had (we picked up an Italian coffee table for a quarter of its retail price) and the office chairs and filing cabinets ready to be taken away as well. Whatever is built there next almost certainly won't last as long as it has and certainly won't be as much of a landmark.
