I first saw this photo a few months ago- taken of ER probably mid to late 60's, before the roof was put on the Kop and before the M621 was built. The intriguing thing is the winding river/canal where the M621 now is, and what looks like 1 or maybe 2 large 'lakes' off Lowfields Road.I've asked various Leeds fans who went to games in this era and no one knows what either the river or lakes are, nor do they remember them. This has now resurfaced on another LUFC forum and is again baffling people.Anyone know what the river and lakes are and what happened to them?[/URL]

The map below labelled c 1964 show Wortley beck wiggling past the ground. At the back are sludge beds, not quite in the same position as the photo, but this must be what the ponds in the photo are.Upload does not seem to be working, so will try nand put on in photobucket

Yup, sure we've covered this before, possibly as Low Beck - sure it's in the archived threads somewhere.

Looking on Leodis Wortley Beck was prone to flooding, hence the lakes ???

I've been having a wee look round and wonder if the thread on The Lemi at page 1 might be of help. Being me, I can't of course, do any more than make reference to it!

Wonder why no one remembers the beck going under lowfields Road- thousands must have crossed it every home game! Looks a sizeable river- where has it gone then? Is it somewhere beneath the M621 flyover?

Over the years the beck has been culverted underground most of the way from Lower Wortley to Water Lane. The Millshaw beck which joins it just west of the railway has also been practically all culverted.
