In the 'Times Past' section on page 16 of the Yorkshire Evening Post (YEP) on August 2 2014 there is an interesting article by Dr Kevin Grady headed 'Ralph Thoresby's 300th anniversary'. It was on July 30 1714 that Ralph Thoresby penned the foreword to his most significant work Ducatus Leodiensis (the title was in italics, but for whatever reason I could not get italics to work despite trying the method in the SL help section). If there is a link to an online version I could not however find one. I did however come across this related link to a report in 2008 in the YEP website that may be of interest:- http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/n ... -1-2193169    (And italics appear as if by magic Leo chameleon)

Yes I knew that it had but its mentions were so scattered around that there did not seem to be a definite thread to put it into, so I thought a new thread specifically for Ralph Thoresby would be OK. As an administrator chameleon could you please therefore place it into what you consider to be the appropriate thread. PS. Thanks for adding the italics to my first post.

Thanks chemimike for those links. I have not looked at all yet but on doing a search of volume 1 of the diary I came across an entry dated 1702 from which I have extracted the following on page 380 (possibly 408 of the whole document):-“31. Began our tour from Cookridge, which I am apt to think reccived (sic) its denomination from the Roman rig or ridge, which passeth by it in the course from Blackmoor, in the parish of Leeds, Alwoodley, and the lately discovered town and camp near Adel-mill to Olicana, &c. Mon cher ami, Mr. Kirk, rode with me to several places in his grounds there where it is not only visible, but points directly to the said camp. Further on, upon Bramhope-moor, in the place now called Stadtfolds, we saw another large camp, but this has a double agger, though by its squareness and the leading of the via vicinalis thereunto, it seems also to have been Roman; hence also we saw the nameless head of our Sheepscar beck, upon which, in so small a distance, are seven or eight mills before it joins with the river Aire at Leeds.”I’ve tried to take care in copying the extract correctly as it did not seem possible to do a copy and paste. I have left “reccived” as it was but have noted it with the (sic) after it.Does anyone know if there is still a Stadtfolds (or similar spelling) in the Bramhope area?

Thanks for that help cnosni. Now knowing whereabouts Stadtfolds may have been I've just had a look at the very useful Old-Maps UK website and in the 1851 1:10,560 map there is a quarry recorded very near the site of the possible camp, but I cannot definitely make out the quarry name. It seems to be one of Stat Fold, Stot Fold, Scat Fold or Scot Fold quarry. I wonder if anyone can make out the name of the quarry or have maps that name it legibly.
