Wasn't sure whether to put this under transport or buildings so thought here was best option! This photo hangs in the Railway pub in Rodley and prompted some debate about the location and the circled building. We decided that it was taken from the wharf around where the cottage owned by Lorraine Chase has been extended to meet the canal. Therefore close to the current Rodley barge beer garden. The curve of the canal is as it is today and the swing bridge is visible. What we're unsure of is what the building circled is?It looks to be where the Chandlers Wharf flats are next to the Ring Road, which was presumably fields then.A second question then debated was whether there was a bridge at the current ring road crossing site. If so, was this building next to the bridge? If there was no bridge, was the only crossing point the swing bridge close to the Railway pub with the road to Calverley carrying on up the field where there are still soem old gas lamps?Apologies for all the questions and hopefully someone knows the answers~![/URL]

Have a look on some of the old maps websites, I'm sure you'll find some answers if you go back a few decades.

I recon that the building you've circled is the one that the red arrow points to.Adding the same shot to google earth shows the buildings - long since gone, in more or less the right place as those in the phot would be.

I didn't know that the bridge was called Owl Bridge - is it named after the pub or was the pub named after it?

Thanks a lot -some really interesting stuff on those maps and those covering nearby areas (for instance the one covering Newlay showing St Margarets church virtually opposite the Abbey Pub, next to the old Newlay station- Never knew that). The maps answered the question re whether there was a bridge, other than the swing bridges, crossing the River and canal at Rodley before the Ring Road- obviously there wasn't.Regarding the mystery building - I think Calverley Bridge Woolen Mill would have been too far down the canal for it to be that. It looks to me that its the structure next to whats described as 'Rodley Gardens'. Any idea what they would have been? Would it have been a park?Another interesting point is that the Railway Hotel in 1875 was actually the building which became the Stansfield (?) pub, later to be Paris restaurant and now the Manor. The current Railway pub isn't shown as a pub by 1910. Does anyone know what that was originally and when it became a pub?

There is a good photograph on Britain from the air which shows the ring road from horsforth to rodley under construction. There looks to be quite a lot of digging going on to dig the ravine that they created for the road.

The Stansfield Arms and the building that was once Paris (now The Manor) aren't the same place, they're not actually on the same road (though it took me a good five mins before I remembered that!) Unless there was another Stansfield on the Ring Road, as well as the one on Apperley Lane in Rawdon.Rather disturbingly I heard this about the Stansfield the other day:
http://www.scoresonthedoors.org.uk/busi ... htmlBlergh. Shame as I used to like the food there, despite the rude and incompetent service that so often went with it. Not all that surprising though, as the management have always appeared to be a bunch of useless muppets!
