I took this photo today (Jan 28 2013) of this sign on a wall in the Dark Arches near to the very far end coming from Neville Street. I wonder if anyone can let me know what it means. I suspect it may relate to the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. The 185m and 1469 yards is confusing, as 185 metres is only about 202 yards. There is a similar worded sign at the road/walkway just before you go onto that going towards Neville Street, so it would seem that the reported distances do not need to be accurate.

For interest I thought I would post this photo I took today (Jan 28 2013) showing the similar worded sign just before the road/walkway at the Dark Arches going to Neville Street.

It's called an engineers line reference. The DOL2 is the code for the section of line it is on.DOL is the Doncaster-Leeds line, and each section of it is given it's own number. *DOL1     Doncaster Marshgate Junction to Wakefield 175m 32ch.* DOL2     Wakefield 175m 32ch to Leeds.* DOL3     Closed Line. * DOL4     Gelderd Road Junction to Leeds West Junction. Each bridge is numbered after the line reference code.I did a bit more about them herehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/phill_dvsn/6247508096/Edit.. I see liits has already answered
