This photo was taken on November 9 2012 and shows a Bench Mark (BM) at a drain next to a field that I passed on Owlet Lane (I know it as that but it seems to either be called Eccup Moor Road or have no name on maps that I've seen). The BM does not seem to be that weathered so it may not be very old, though it could get protection from much weathering when the site is overgrown. There is a similar drain on the other side of the road but it has no BM.On checking the Old-Maps UK website I found there is no BM noted on a 1:2,500 1892/93 map at the position where the drain will likely be (roughly half way between Bank House Farm and the Eccup water treatment works) but there is a BM there on a 1:2,500 1908 map (its height is given as 437.1 feet). There is however no BM noted on a 1:2,500 1965 map, though oddly that map does record at least two BMs nearby that are not on the other maps. At where the BM is that I saw the 1965 map does however state '437' (presumably a height).I wonder if the BM that I saw is original or could it be a more modern BM in view of the seemingly lack of weathering. It does though seem odd to redo a BM where it may no longer be known. I find it interesting to come across things like this when walking around.

It looks like the stone may have been reused. A search of the Bench Mark database [link below] doesn't turn anything up.http://www.bench-marks.org.uk/

Thanks also for that useful link. A quick use of that website's search revealed that there are several Bench Marks locally/localish to me that seem not to be recorded in the website (such as that in my thread). Some I've come across I subsequently find are though noted on maps.

Be careful which type of benchmark you search for. I think on the website, the default is “Flush Bracket” and also be careful which “levelling line” criteria you use, but I agree that they are missing quite a few “Cut” and “Bolt” bench marks.
